CAELUM - LG Display & Dezeen Contest Winner

CAELUM
LG Oled integrated desk

Industrial Design / 2022

Caelum designed as a response to the change in lifestyles brought on by the pandemic.
By incorporating an OLED display into the desk, Caelum aims to free up desk space that would normally be taken up    by a computer monitor.
The design makes use of transparent OLED displays to create a product that offers users a glimpse into their surroundings in a bid to prevent a monotonous working experience.

Caelum has been awarded with 1st place in Dezeen and LG Display's OLEDS Go! design  competition
Contest brief

Contest seeks designs to enhance people's changing lifestyles
Advances in technology and shifting cultural values are altering the way people of all ages across the world live their lives, while the coronavirus pandemic has made many people reevaluate the way they live and work.
The second edition of the OLEDs Go! competition is seeking designs that incorporate small to medium OLED displays (between 27 and 55 inches diagonally) that provide new experiences and enhance people's changing lives.

OLED panels can also be flexible or transparent when they are not illuminated (although they cannot currently be both transparent and flexible).

Finding the idea

Our desk has become the most important object in our home and we have started to spend most of our lives here. Well, why shouldn't this table where we spend so much time be more technological and stylish? When our monitors, which are located in the center of our work desks, are turned off, they only consist of a black screen and this visually affects the decoration in not a pleasant way.
Design Process

When designing Caelum, the aim was not just to have a design where the monitor is integrated into the desk, but to make it customizable and functional.
Caelum provides a working environment where your view never closes thanks to OLED technology.
The Caelum desk is designed to be used at home or in office environments

Designed for use at home or in office environments, Caelum's transparent display also enables colleagues to see each other and hold conversations while adhering to social distancing requirements when the desks are placed back to back.
Caelum can be customised with different coloured tabletops and legs and is designed with optional integrated partitions to reduce noise and foster concentration when focused work is required, offering even more flexibility to suit a wide range of working styles.
Design Details

Good design lies in the details being well resolved. The simplicity and functionality of Caelum lie in the meticulous assembly of the components that make up the desk.
Details such as integrating electronic components into the desk, seamlessly integrating the power button onto the surface for turning on the computer, and many others aim to provide simplicity to the user with Caelum.
